Shelby Summit 2013

image

  • 8 Shelby’ers.
  • 7 direct hits with snowballs.
  • 6 pots of coffee.
  • 5 beds.
  • 4 meetings.
  • 3 interns.
  • 2 days.
  • 1 hot tub.
  • 0 connectivity.

The Shelby Summit 2013.

Last week, we held the first annual Shelby Summit — a two day event in which we took the entire team* up North a couple hours to a house in the woods with no wifi/phone service. We revisited our core values, laid out our strategy for 2013, set big goals, both personally and professionally, and had a lot of laughs along the way.

Planning the Summit came together quickly, as Dan and I realized that January is already off to a flying start and if we didn’t take a minute to slow down, it’ll be the second quarter before we knew it. Luckily, our team is small enough that we execute fast and our man Frasher is an ace on AirB’nB, so we found a big old house that was off the grid and booked it.

Prior to leaving, I asked the team to do two things.

  1. Spend time thinking about goals for 2013. Professionally and personally.
  2. Submit ingredients needed to prepare a course with your partner (both assigned by Dan and I) for our team dinner Thursday night. More on this later.

Most of the team got to the house Wednesday night (the rest came up Thursday AM), and I kicked off the day with some opening remarks, ground rules, and the goal of the Summit: “Get everyone at Shelby aligned and excited for 2013, with clear goals as a product, company, brand, and as individuals.”

We then jumped into a discussion of our core values that we wrote together this past summer. For any startups considering this type of exercise, I highly recommend putting in the time early on, then revisiting them months later to see what holds up and what doesn’t. Based upon our discussion, one core value subsumed another, others evolved to better reflect who we are, but otherwise our values held strong and have directly impacted the way we work since writing them down. Further, having this discussion at the start of the Summit gave us a vocabulary with which to address everything else.

After a quick lunch, we headed out for a hike around the Ashokan Reservoir. We lucked out with beautiful weather, and had some fun tossing snowballs around.

image

The main dish of our Summit was next, with a few hours spent diving deep into our plans for the upcoming year. While Dan and I have a great direction for this, it’s imperative that everyone understands the challenges ahead and commits to the goals we all set as a company. This led to some amazing feedback for us as founders, and I am extremely fortunate to work with this team - passionate people who want to raise the bar. (I know all startups might talk this talk, but this team walks the walk).

image

Now for some serious laughs. To prepare dinner, Dan and I assigned everyone to an odd-ball couple - people who don’t work together much or are generally opposites in personality - and gave each team responsibility for a course. No one was to collaborate, so it was a true pot-luck.

  • Cocktail: “Old Fashioned” by Reece and Frasher
  • Appetizers: Prosciutto Mac’n’Cheese Cupcakes, Salad (dressing not homemade) Gorgonzola/Honey and Fontina Prosciutto Crostinis by Chris and Vincent
  • Main: Grilled meats. Lots of ‘em. Spicy Grilled Mushroom/Eggplant (Henry and Mike)
  • Sides: Salad with Homemade Poppy Seed Dressingand Candied Almonds(!) and Roast Potato & Pepper Hash by Josh and Ian
  • Dessert: Gluten-Free Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt Oatmeal Cookies by Dan and Brendan

image

All I can say, is this team can cook. Lots of pride went into the preparations and everyone enjoyed it, especially Chris and Vincent’s appetizers. [It’s also worth noting that I haven’t laughed that hard, for that long, in a while. My face hurt from laughing so much. This team is hilarious].

We cleaned up our act and hung by the fire for a couple of great games that will remain nameless (so as not to give away the keys to winning for future hires), before settling down for a discussion about goal setting. This involved explaining the S.M.A.R.T framework “Specific, Measurable, Agreed upon, Realistic, Timely” which we then all applied to our individual goals together the next morning.

Having everyone share their goals out loud was a perfect capstone for the Summit. We now all know what it is we want to achieve as individuals, and how that will make us better as a company now, and in the future. I won’t list out our personal or company goals here, but if you stay tuned, they should be apparent in everything we do this year.

Here’s to our team and to 2013. Let’s do this!

Why We Burned The Boats

reecepacheco:

As legend has it, when the explorer Cortes landed in Mexico he ordered his crew to burn the boats that brought them there. This left the men with no choice but to march ahead into the unknown.

Recently, we announced that we planned to shut down the current version of Shelby that we’d launched late last fall.

We burned our boat.

The decision wasn’t easy, but it felt right, and it still does.

In a startup, you have limited time, limited resources, and consequently little room for error. We realized a long time ago that the current model we built wasn’t the optimal solution for the long run, so we started building a new version that could scale with our growth and provide more value to our users.

Some people have asked us why we didn’t just wait until we had the new product ready and while there are a ton of reasons, it really boils down to this…

  • #3 Money - When you process as much data as we do, it isn’t cheap. Running a second set of servers to process the same data just wasn’t worth it.
  • #2 Time - We want to get this new version of Shelby out the door as quickly as possible, that means we should be spending as much of our time on it as we can… not maintaining legacy product/features.
  • #1 Focus - The startup illuminati often speak of “focus.” We are now a company without a product in the market. If that doesn’t focus a team on one thing and one thing only, then I don’t know what does.

And as far as whether or not we made the right decision… it doesn’t matter. We’re in this for the long haul and the only thing we can do now is build a great product. Forward, we march…

Video Card + Uninterrupted Playback
Every so often, we’d like to show off a small bit of what we’ve been working on, so you can know what to expect when Shelby is back up. I recently posted the image of our new “video card” to Dribbble.
We wanted to unclutter your Stream, yet still let you interact.  The video card achieves this goal by aggregating information, providing context, and allowing you to Like, Comment, save, or share the video without disctracting from the viewing experience.
What do you think?

“I’m your guy!”

reecepacheco:

Two years ago today we got an email from some guy with the subject “I’m your guy!”

We were hiring for our first engineer to join Dan as we built HomeField and this was the first hit we got from a blog post and some tweets about the job.

On paper, this guy looked pretty good. Built a couple apps, PhD in physics, college rower… but he also wasn’t a native coder or startup guy… regardless, we started ‘dating’…

The first contact we had was when he and Dan attended a NY Tech Talk. It was meant to vet him technically. Instead, Dan and him talked at length about how their wives are both teachers, they both like the Mets and craft beers. SWOOON!

So he was a fit culturally, but what about technically? We had to test that, so who better to vet him technically than me, the non-technical founder/ceo, right? <sarcasm>

I met with him and asked him to explain technical issues simply and he did. Dan liked working with him, so we put him through a month long tryout. He even agreed to come up to my parent’s house on Cape Cod for a week with the team before joining full time.

If you know my team, you already know I’m talking about Henry and my point in retelling this story is that he joined HomeField at a time when we were still figuring things out [in particular, our hiring process]. He worked without salary. He made it through TechStars with us.  He stayed with us in our switch to Shelby…

I couldn’t be more grateful for that loyalty and dedication… that attitude of ‘doing whatever needs to get done’ and belief in the team goes such a long way in forging relationships and a strong team.

The line you hear is that “startups are like rollercoasters” and it is true. Rarely do early stage/first time founders have everything figured out. As an early hire, you have to be ready to throw yourself to the fire and deal with whatever comes your way. Henry’s done just that and it’s part of what makes working with this team so special.

Thanks for being our guy, Henry.

In closing, I thought I’d share this video I shot in fall of 2010, in which Henry nearly loses his shit as we assess some of the software our HomeField customers used on a daily basis. Laughs ensue…

We love you Henry! Here’s to many more years together!

Shit Everybody’s Saying: Shut this Trend Down

by Jordan, Intern[A]

Your Facebook News Feed.  Your Tumblr Dashboard.  Your Reddit front page. The internet is no longer a safe place, you guys.  The calls are coming from inside the house.

But I digress.  You’ve probably seen the popular viral video trend built around the phrasal template “Shit ___ Say”.  The “Shit Girls Say” series gained popularity in December of last year, and has since inspired hundreds of spin-offs that are spiraling out of control.

In fact, watching these videos has turned into a tiring game of Russian roulette.  While the trend originated with videos intended to attract large audiences, it has spawned derivatives that only hold relevance to extremely specific groups of people – please see: “Shit Natural Hair Girls Say.”

Actually, don’t.  Do not “please see” that video.  Dozens of this meme’s subsidiaries are terrible, but we have no right to roll our eyes when an internet-inept friend eagerly sends us the link.  It’s our fault, you guys.

We are the reason you can’t spend more than five minutes online without seeing a video of a cat.  We helped humanity discover that the honey badger doesn’t have a care in the world.  We paid off Antoine Dodson’s student loans.  We caused “Shit Christians Say to Jews.” We are the 99%!

I’ll admit, I’m as guilty as the next person.  I shared “Shit Girls Say” and “Shit Black Girls Say” with every Tom, Dick and Harry on my social networking block.  But when you can’t scroll through your newsfeed without seeing five posts about “Shit Girls Say on Their Periods” (Really, internet?), something needs to be done.

The time has come (the walrus said), to take back the internet.  Occupy all streets and let it be known that we, the people of the interwebs, in order to form a more perfect browsing experience, establish better memes, ensure domestic hilarity, provide for the common blogger and secure the blessings of viral videos for ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish that we will no longer encourage the “Shit ____ Say” meme.

So before you give in and find yourself watching “Shit Gay Asians Say to Black Lesbian Zookeepers” (not a thing… yet), say enough is enough, and treat yo’self with Slacktory’s totally meta “Shit People Say About Shit People Say Videos.”

Feature Week: Search the Videoverse

Man has always had a need for speed, longed to discover that which is unimaginable, and desired to reach into the deepest regions of the Videoverse. Now, all that which was unthinkable has been realized.

Now, you can

(Say it to yourself in a booming voice. Pretty cool, huh?)

Shelby was already incredible when she pulled in videos from your social networks, but now all of YouTube is yours for the taking. (Additional platforms will be integrated soon!) Type any search into the Videoverse bar, and Shelby will immediately find all relevant results from your queues, and stack them on top of search results from YouTube. If you begin watching an item from the Videoverse, it will be jumped into your Timeline queue, and from there you can favorite a video, save it for later, or share.

>OK. You’re making API calls to YouTube. So what?

So what?! So, THE VIDEOVERSE. You can find and watch millions of videos without having to click around to different websites or social networks. Shelby (like a crazy beautiful Pokémon) has evolved into a video fortress. DO YOU GET HOW AWESOME THIS IS? You can watch and save all your favorite videos in one place!

>Holy macaroni! Mind=blown!

I know, right?! You’re welcome. You’re so so welcome.

>What now?

Go exploring. And try not to hurt yourself. There’s a lot of awesome waiting for you.

Feature Week: An Important Message from Our iOS Developer Mark, OR, TouchPlay has arrived

The Shelby iOS app version 1.5 is in the App Store, free to download, and it has TouchPlay.

TouchPlay, for those that haven’t heard, is a Shelby-original feature that allows you to wirelessly stream video with its social context to your Apple TV from your iPad 2 or iPhone 4S. And, to top it off, you can control the whole experience with a gesture remote.

»The future is now

When you try out TouchPlay, it feels like the future*. You’re driving your TV’s display from your pencil-thin mobile device on your lap, and your phone or tablet turns into the coolest remote ever.

I may be a little biased, since I’m the iOS dev for Shelby, but it seems like this is the way the world should work. I never want to hook up my laptop to my TV via an HDMI cable again. And frankly, I shudder at the idea of hooking up a laptop via a VGA cable to some conference room’s projector.

Apps, whether they’re iOS apps or Android or web or computer, are going to need to figure out how to fill and control additional screens with useful information and a cool experience.

We took some inspiration from the gaming world (folks like Real Racing 2 have been doing this for a while), but other apps need to get on board with this approach also. It’s awesome for games and video, and it would be awesome for group messaging, TweetDeck, music browsing, flight searches, etc. as well.

»The reason to buy an *existing* Apple TV and hope for a *real* Apple TV

The existing Apple TV is cool. It’s a great little device that has an awesome Netflix implementation and makes it easy to buy iTunes store content and get it on your TV.

But Airplay Mirroring and TouchPlay are the first hints of the device’s real capabilities. I can’t wait for a *real* Apple TV to show up, with Airplay Mirroring built into it, and with Apple and other 3rd-party apps designed to take advantage of an Apple TV screen when it’s there.

I was never that excited about the current Apple TV 2G until now. iOS 5 and Airplay Mirroring have a world of potential, and with Gigabit WiFi coming and hopefully the rumors of a *real* Apple TV bearing fruit, I’m more excited than ever for the next-generation living room experience.

TouchPlay is really cool. It’s our new toy, and we love it. Try it out, show your friends, send us suggestions for how to make it even more awesome.

This is only the beginning of the next-gen living room, and it’s exciting to help shape it.

//Mark

* I worked on the future once before, at VMware doing virtualization software. Virtualization was an obvious improvement for datacenters, and it felt like the future to me then. So I have pretty high hopes for TouchPlay and Apple TV and Airplay Mirroring, since it feels like the future to me, too.

Feature Week: Exciting changes to the Shelby.tv app for Facebook Timeline

Shelby.tv is powered by your friends for a reason: because videos are more meaningful when they’ve been recommended by people who matter to you. Better Facebook integration means better video discovery, more relevant and enjoyable content, and lots of serendipity.

(Serendipity! Why, I LOVE serendipity!)

That’s why we’re thrilled to announce an awesome new feature to Shelby.tv! Starting today, you can share your favorite videos to Facebook like never before, making it easy for your friends to discover the videos you’re already enjoying.

(OMG this is like the most amazing thing that’s ever happened to me!)

As shown below, if one of your friends using the Shelby.tv app watches or favorites a video you’re interested in, you’ll be able to launch that video with just one click from the ticker, their timeline, or your news feed.

[Ahhhhhhhhhhhh the crowd goes wild ahhhhhhhh]

Your recent activity will be aggregated on your timeline like this:

And if you click past that point, you’ll be able to see your all time Shelby.tv history. One of the fun things about posting activity to your timeline is that you can always look up a video you forgot to favorite, or look back at what you were watching one month ago, two months ago, forever ago!

(Holy moly that sounds nostalgia-inducing and amazing! I’m going to try it right now!)

You can decide what activity is shared with whom, and can always remove posts directly from your timeline, or edit your sharing settings at any time. The next time you sign into Shelby.tv, you’ll be prompted to activate Facebook sharing. Your choice will be signified by a colored bar under the Facebook icon in the upper-right corner, and you can toggle sharing on or off as desired.

We’re really excited to roll out these changes, and we hope you enjoy the improved Shelby.tv experience on Facebook. Get started »

2 inexplicably popular videos from this weekend

Usually when I track video popularity within Shelby, I’m not surprised by what boils up to the top. But this past weekend, two very different videos competed for attention.

One of these is an ABBA tribute. The other is a new rap video. I’m not telling you which. Good luck.

Introducing TouchPlay

Next week, team Shelby is headed to CES.  I know what you’re thinking, why would a tiny startup head to one of the biggest consumer electronics shows in the world, especially when Apple has already won CES?

It all started when we won a booth at CES this past summer as part of a competition here in NYC.  Ever since releasing our iPad app this past October, we’ve been obsessed with making the Shelby experience on tablet as compelling and addictive as our web app. That’s why we didn’t stop at simply integrating standard AirPlay functions. We decided to take advantage of iOS Mirroring functionality (something that many iOS apps treat as an afterthought) and build something even more compelling. Next week at CES, we’ll be showcasing an awesome new experience for our iPad users, something we’re calling TouchPlay.

To activate TouchPlay, turn on AirPlay with Mirroring in your iPad settings and when you launch the Shelby app, you’ll be greeted with gorgeous full screen video on your TV that has that familiar Shelby look and feel.  We’ve also added a gesture remote, which turns your iPad into a no-look controller so you can kick back and fully enjoy what you’re watching. Check out this quick filmed-at-2AM demo of what it looks like below:

We’re really excited about what’s possible with Apple’s Mirroring technology and where we think more companies will be focusing attention as Apple gets closer to releasing a full-fledged TV experience.  The marriage of the iPad and the TV is creating some amazing opportunities for dual-screen viewing and interaction; this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Can’t wait to get your hands on this new feature? You won’t have to wait long, look for it in the App store soon.

-Chris

Note: The full functionality of the gesture remote and mirroring mode require iOS 5 on iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.  Other iOS devices (older iPads and iPhones) will still work with regular Shelby Airplay functionality.
